St Aidan’s Anglican Church Great War Honour Board, Exeter Middle Image Image Image Image Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial is made of brass and mounted on a wooden base, measuring approximately 20 inches wide and 30 inches tall. It is attached to the eastern wall of St Aidan’s Anglican Church, Exeter. Its brass plaque is engraved with black and red lettering, listing the names of 27 parishioners who signed up for service in the First World War. Five are marked as having died while on service. St Aidan’s Anglican Church was styled on the ancient Celtic churches of old Scotland with a semi-circular eastern window portraying the Good Samaritan. It was opened for services in July 1895 and dedicated on 11 January 1896. Inscription To the Glory of God [in red lettering] and in the memory of those brave men from this Parish who gave their lives for the Empire and Humanity in the Great War 1914 – 19 [Names of 5 veterans who died on active service] Faithful unto Death [in red lettering] In honour of their Comrades who also served [Names] And in thanksgiving for their return this tablet was erected.
