St Augustine's Anglican Church Great War Roll of Honour, Inverell Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial consists of two large and impressive oak honour rolls for the Great War. A total of 248 names are listed and highlighted in gilt. They are not in strict alphabetical order. Both boards are richly decorated with carvings in their pediments and borders. The carvings include gum nuts, eucalyptus leaves, the Rising Sun emblem and a Crown. The rolls were created by Private J. Williams, who had his feet amputated as a result of a severe attack of trench feet. He was one of the returned soldiers of the Randwick Hospital in Sydney who worked at the Red Cross Hospital Handicraft's Depot to manufacture war memorials (The Inverell Times, 29 April 1919). The memorial was unveiled at the church on 4 May 1919. The Vicar Reverend E.H. Stammer addressed the congregation, which included representatives of the Municipal Council, the Shires and the military. Mrs W.D. Wright of Bundarra, the mother of five sons who enlisted, performed the unveiling. The event was reported in The Inverell Times on 6 May. The article included the full list of names on the honour rolls. The rolls are available for viewing during services at the church. Inscription St Augustine's Church Roll of Honour [A.I.F.
