Stannifer and Old Mill First World War Roll of Honour, Tingha Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial is a stately honour roll for the First World War. It consists of a marble plaque, set within an elegant timber frame. The frame features a classical pediment at the top and two turned columns, one on either side of the plaque. The roll lists the names of 33 men from Stannifer and Old Mill who served in the war, 25 and eight respectively. The names have been divided into two groups, one for each village, inscribed into the marble and blackened. The roll was originally unveiled in the Stannifer Public Hall on 18 March 1921. The President of Macintyre Shire, Councillor Hughes, presided over the event and Mrs Ellis, mother of one the boys who lost their lives in the war, performed the unveiling. The Inverell Times, 1 April 1921, recorded the details of the ceremony and also published the names on the roll. Stannifer is a small rural village located nine kilometres north of Tingha in the Inverell Shire of NSW. Old Mill is located a few kilometres away. Both were significant early mining areas supported by other industries, including timber and agriculture. At some stage, the roll was moved to the Tingha Sports and Recreation Club. Access to it is restricted to the opening hours of the club.
