Description / Background

This war memorial consists of a decorative brick wall and an adjacent garden bed. The wall bears several plaques, including honour rolls for locals who served in the Second World War, the Malayan Emergency, the Vietnam War and the Korean War. There are also numerous small plaques for individual veterans. The garden features a collection of small white crosses that have been 'planted' in the soil and small plaques for returned veterans who have died.

The wall and garden are located in Woodward Memorial Park in Thirroul, NSW, positioned to the north of the Thirroul War Memorial. In reference to this memorial, the wall is set on a base of orange tiles, at the centre of which is a white eight-pointed star surrounded by black tiles.

The wall was unveiled on 30 June 1996 by Mr Rusty Priest, former RSL NSW State President. It is not currently known when the garden was established.

Woodward Memorial Park is next to Thirroul Railway Station, within the boundary of Sydney Trains-controlled land. It provides a path from the community carpark to the station entrance.

Note: the names in the veterans table below come from the individual plaques on the wall only.

Anzacs of Greece

[Classical Greek quote]

Doing battle beside the Hellespont these men lost their shining youth. They brought honour to their homeland, so that the enemy groaned as it carried off the harvest of war, and for themselves they set up a deathless memorial of their courage.
