Description / Background

This war memorial is an honor roll for the Second World War. It consists of four distinct elements and is made of three materials. The backing board is rosewood and features carved top and base pieces. In the centre of the board is a grey marble shield, inscribed with the names of 52 veterans from Tregeagle and Chilcott's Grass who served in the war. Seven names are grouped together, all marked with Latin crosses, indicating they fell in the war. At the top of the shield is a decorative metal scroll, flanked by the Union Jack and Australian Red Ensign. The flags are enameled and painted in full colour. Below the names is a second metal piece, in the shape of a laurel garland. In its centre is a plaque inscribed with the dedication.

Around March 1945, a public meeting was held in Tregeagle to discuss establishing a war memorial. It was decided to create a trust fund and trustees were appointed. They were instructed to hold another meeting before March 1946 to "report on the fund and to permit the public to discuss its administration." Attendees also debated the form of the memorial. Several options were raised; however, all agreed that "an honor roll was essential." Fundraising activities were also decided upon. A subscription list was opened during the meeting and immediately raised £64 3s. This would be supplemented by "a series of 500 tournaments with socials combined, over a period of six weeks, commencing on April 14"  (Northern Star, 23 March 1945).

In October 1945, another productive meeting progressed the project. On the agenda was who would be included on the roll. It was agreed to allow "all members of the forces who resided in Tregeagle district, or whose parents were resident in the district, at the time of entering the services." A list was started and 51 names were offered up. Attendees also accepted a tender for construction of the roll of £70, provided "the new roll be a replica of the old one" (Northern Star, 25 October 1945). This refers to the original version of the Tregeagle and Chilcott's Grass District First World War Honor Roll.

The roll was ready by 2 April 1946 and was displayed at a public meeting. It was compared to the First World War roll and the executive officers were instructed to darken the timber to more closely match the existing roll. Final preparations were then made and the unveiling took place at the Tregeagle Hall on 29 April. Mrs Les Williams of Tregeagle performed the unveiling (Northern Star, 2 April 1946; 2 May 1946).

The roll hangs on a wall inside the hall, alongside the matching Tregeagle and Chilcott's Grass District First World War Honor Roll. The hall is used for commemorative services throughout the year. Access inside is restricted to its opening hours.
