Description / Background

Set within the gardens of Tregeagle Public School, is a memorial dedicated to those who served in the Second World War. It consists of a concrete plinth, supporting a steel flagpole. Attached to the sides of the plinth are four white marble tablets. Three of them are inscribed with the names of servicemen and women, and the fourth bears the dedication.

At a Parents and Citizens' Association (P. & C.) meeting on 23 March 1946, Mrs W. Dais moved a memorial be erected to honour those who went to the war. A committee was set up and plans were drawn. The flagpole was sourced from Stewarts and Hoyds of Brisbane for £10 7s. Beckinsales of Lismore were contracted to manufacture the tablets and Mr Oliver Davis was to organise the concreting.

In early 1948, a working bee was held to lay a concrete path from the school's front gate to the newly constructed memorial. Not long after, the unveiling ceremony was held on 10 March. The school's inspector had granted a full day holiday for the occasion and a photograph of children standing behind the memorial was published in the Northern Star on 25 March. The unveiling was performed by P. & C. President Mr Robert Raison and his daughter Mrs Ethel Sinclair (nee Raison).

Various commemorative services are held on site throughout the year. Access to the memorial is otherwise restricted, as it is within school grounds.

Note: Historical information for the listing has been sourced from Tregeagle Public School: the first 100 years, compiled by Terry Flatley (Centenary Committee, Treageagle NSW, 1990).
