Description / Background

The Ulmarra Public School First World War Roll of Honour commemorates 65 ex-pupils of the school who served in the war. The timber board has a classical pediment at the top, which is decorated with a colour painting of the crossed Union Jack and Australian flags. There is also a small shelf at the bottom of the board and elegant carved columns on both sides. The names are printed neatly in gold lettering across two columns in the main body of the board.

The roll was purchased in Sydney by the school's headmaster, Mr E.F. Pfeiffer. It was unveiled at the school on 2 February 1917 in front of a large number of parents, locals and visitors from the surrounding area. The Mayor of Ulmarra presided at the gathering and following his address, he called on Mrs Blumer, wife of the District Inspector of Schools, to unveil the roll. The proceedings included speeches and a musical programme (Daily Examiner, 3 February 1917).

The memorial is located within a building at the school, so access to it may be limited.
