Upper Copmanhurst First World War Honor Roll Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial is a well-designed timber honor roll, for the First World War. It has a distinctive carved urn at the top, and carved columns on each side. The inscription and names are painted in gold, in the centre of the board. All 13 servicemen listed returned to Australia following the war and Private Edward Thomas Schuhmacher is noted as receiving a Military Medal. The roll was unveiled at the Upper Copmanhurst Literary Institute on 18 September 1920. On 23 September, the Grafton Examiner published a detailed account of the function, which was well attended. The unveiling was performed by Mrs John Phemister, wife of Mr C.D. Phemister, honorary secretary of the War Memorial Committee. Mr Phemister had previously advertised the unveiling as a "social afternoon", in the Daily Examiner on 11 September. The ad announced free admission, a dance that night and extended a particular invitation to returned soldiers. The roll has since been moved to the Copmanhurst War Memorial Hall. Access to the memorial is restricted to the opening hours of the hall.
