Urunga Second World War Memorial Middle Image Image Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial consists of a dark red brick wall, surrounded by white metal fencing topped with fleur de lys associated with religious symbolism. The memorial commemorates those who served in the Second World War. Three commemorative plaques in bronze and marble are mounted on the memorial wall commemorating Victory in Europe, Victory in the Pacific and the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces. The plaques were created from programs developed by the Australian Government to commemorate the end of the Second World War. The Daily Examiner (Grafton), 5 July 1948, reported on a well-attended public meeting held at Urunga, where it was decided to accept the offer from the trustees of the small reserve between Urunga tennis courts and Morgo Street as a memorial to honour those who served in the Second World War. Mr G Hiddleton spoke on behalf of the trustees and outlined the possibilities of the project, including a designed layout and tree planting campaign to incorporate later memorial gates and archway. Mr Hiddleton was asked to prepare a plan to submit to the committee, which was appointed at the meeting. Arising out of this plan was the memorial to commemorate the end of the war and those Australians who served. The memorial is located in Urunga War Memorial Park.
