Description / Background

The memorial was originally erected in 1990 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli and to honour those from the Wagga Wagga district who served in the Second World War. It features a semi-circular memorial wall and an eternal flame, positioned in a circular pool. The wall contains multiple brass plaques bearing the names of more than 2,000 men and women who enlisted from the district and saw active service during the Second World War.

The memorial is located in the Victory Memorial Gardens, adjacent to the memorial archway. It was designed to complement the structure and design of the archway and park, through its circular paving and classic appearance. In a ceremony on 24 May 1990, the monument incorporating the eternal flame was officially handed over by the President of the Wagga Wagga RSL sub-Branch, Maxwell E Morris, to the Mayor of Wagga Wagga, Alderman P Brassil. The flame was officially lit by the late Ted Drake, a First World War ex-serviceman. The honour roll and memorial was officially dedicated on 18 August 1991 by Archdeacon Stephen Williams, Father Wilfred Plunkett and Reverend Beth Howard.

More recently, the names of those who served in the Anglo-Boer War, Korea, Malaysia, Borneo, Vietnam, Somalia, East Timor, Iraq, Afghanistan, Women's Services, and Peacekeeping Missions have been added to the wall.

The eternal flame was re-furbished in 2014-2015. It was re-dedicated on 24 February 2015 when the new flame was officially re-lit by Colin Bell, a Second World War veteran.
