Description / Background

The Wagga Wagga RSL Club Kangaroos Recruiting March 100th Anniversary Memorial is a modern metal monument, tapered towards the top in the style of an obelisk. On its sides is a map of the route taken by the Wagga and District enlistees as they joined the march. The memorial is accompanied by a flagpole and a plinth featuring the dedication 'Lest we forget'.

This tribute to those who served was dedicated on 1 December 2015 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Kangaroos Recruiting March, which began in December 1915. The War Memorial Museum has published a short history of the march online. They state the march left Wagga Wagga and passed through the towns of Junes, Illabo, Bethungra, Cootamundra, Wallenbean, Galong, Goondah, Binalong, Bowning, Yass, Goulburn, Wingello, Bundanoon, Sutton Forest, Moss Vale, Mittagong, Picton, Camden, Campbelltown, Petersham, and arrived at The Domain in Sydney. It was the longest recruiting march held during the First World War, spanning 563 kilometres.

Also in Wagga Wagga are plaques located on Anzac Avenue at the Victory Memorial Gardens, which were dedicated for the march on the same day.
