Description / Background

The Wallsend Soldiers' Memorial is a tapered sandstone, topped with four marble columns that support a marble top piece. Within the internal space made by the columns is a marble column, that is inscribed with an honour roll in memory of the fallen. Additional places and honour rolls are attached to the sandstone column.

This memorial has been relocated from its original location.

Original site plaque - Nelson Street Wallsend

Wallsend Soldiers' Memorial was erected on this site in 1919 by public subscription in commemoration of service & sacrifice to those who fought and fell in the Great War of 1914-1918. The original memorial was relocated in Wallsend Park in 1971. This memorial also marks the site from which the original members of the 1st Australian Imperial Force departed for overseas service.

On the top of the centre section, above the names, are the words:

Lest we forget. Our Heroes who fought and fell in the Great War 1914-1918.

North face - bottom

A tribute of honour to sons and citizens of glorious memory. All for each and each for all twas thus they heard the Empire's call for freedom home and motherland

Red Cross Contingent. They were also ready and their names liveth for evermore. Matron B. Lowrey Matron A. Cuthbertson Sister I.E. Lovell Sister L. Abell Royal Red Cross Nurse E. Scott. 

East face - bottom

Erected by public subscription in commemoration of service and sacrifice in the world's Greatest War 1914-1918.

South face - bottom

To those who paid the supreme sacrifice 1939-45 - Korea - Vietnam

West face - bottom

This monument was unveiled on the 24th May 1919 by the Hon. John Estell M.L.A. Adam Cook Thomas Abel Esq J.P. Town Clerk Mayor.
