Wongalea and Cooks Myalls Great War Honour Roll Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The Wongalea and Cooks Myalls Great War Honour Roll is a timber board made of light English oak, with fluted sides and a pointed Grecian pediment. At the top is a large wreath in the centre of the pediment. There are timber shelves at the top and bottom of the board. The names are listed across 2 columns, and are not in alphabetical order. The names are printed in gold, with dark drop shadowing. The three soldiers who fell in the war are identified with a red Maltese cross. The board was made of Mr A.S. Green of Parkes. It was unveiled on 23 September 1922 at a ceremony held at the Wongalea School. The event was reported in detail in the Western Champion (Parkes) on 28 September 1922. The account described a large gathering addressed by Mr T. Hamilton, who chaired the event, with the unveiling of the board performed by Mrs Hockey senior. At the time of the ceremony, a machine gun war trophy, which had been in the hands of the trustees for some time, was erected in the school. Wongalea School opened as a Provisional School in 1913 and closed as a Public School in May 1970. The honour roll is now located in the Wongalea School House at the Henry Parkes Centre in Parkes.
