Woodenbong Central School Memorial Gate Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This memorial gate consists of four brick columns. The two larger columns support a metal arch bearing the words 'Lest we forget' in metal letters. The smaller columns support a small metal gate which acts as an entrance to the school grounds. Two panels of wire fence join the columns either side of the entrance gate. The memorial was designed by the Woodenbong Parents and Citizens' Association and members of the school in the 1930s. It was made by W. Don. Mr Thomas, Director of Education, dedicated the gate at an Anzac Day commemoration service in 1937. History Prior to a Parents and Citizens' meeting held at the school on Wednesday 14 August 1935, discussion had taken place to consider construction of memorial gates for the school. The scheme for establishing the memorial was outlined by the Headmaster, Mr Towner, and those present at the meeting approved the project. A sub-committee was formed to call tenders for the supply of materials and erection of the columns. To cover costs a shilling fund was formed, and the local branch of the RSL promised support. Further planning continued throughout 1936. In its issue of 27 April 1937, The Kyogle Examiner described the opening ceremony in detail. Shortly after the school provided a photograph of the finished gate, which was published by the Examiner on 30 April.
