Wyrallah Presbyterian Church Great War Roll of Honor Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial is an honour roll for the First World War. It consists of a white marble tablet, shaped like an unfurled scroll. It is mounted on a black backing board and neatly framed in timber. The names of 28 men from the Wyrallah Presbyterian Church who served in the war are inscribed on the tablet. Each name is highlighted in black. They are not in alphabetical order. The memorial was dedicated at the church on 5 August 1917 by Reverend G. W. McAlpine. The service was reported in the Northern Star on 7 August. Reverend McAlpine addressed the congregation and traced the history of the Bismarck Empire and its involvement in the war. After unveiling the memorial , he "said it pained him to know that some of the men whose names were inscribed there had paid the great price" but their service had created a "true foundation on which is to be built up that mighty temple which stands for righteousness, liberty and peace." When describing the roll, the article said: The tablet, which occupies a space on the wall to the right of the chancel, is of white marble, fashioned to represent a partly unrolled parchment, on which the names of men appear, with a background of now rare Belgian black marble, the whole resting on a base of hand carved Omaru stone of floral design. This description differs to the memorial currently located in the Wyrallah Hall, so it may have been refurbished at some stage. It is possible the 'floral stone' may have been lost, damaged, or removed. Access to view the memorial is restricted to the opening hours of the hall.
