Description / Background

The Coledale First and Second World Wars Memorial is located in the front courtyard of the Coledale RSL Memorial Hall. It is a black marble pillar, topped with a Latin cross. It stands on top of a three-stepped base, made of the same material. Set into the concrete surrounding the memorial is a stone tablet, bearing a dedication.

The pillar is decorated on each of its four sides with an image of the Rising Sun badge of the Australian Imperial Force. Two of its sides are inscribed with an honour roll of those who fell in the two world wars. The third side bears a dedication to these veterans and the fourth side includes a dedication to those who have lost their lives in subsequent conflicts and peacekeeping missions in which Australia has been involved.

This pillar replaces the original memorial that stood on the same site. It was re-dedicated on 20 February 2010. The original version was made of white marble and was of similar design, but had different inscriptions.

The memorial and the hall are used by the Coledale RSL sub-Branch for commemorative services, such as Anzac Day.
