Moree Services Club El Alamein Memorial Plaque Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This plaque commemorates this desert victory at El Alamein, Egypt, in the Second World War. It is located on a wall at the Moree Services Club. Three major battles took place around El Alamein in North Africa between July and November 1942. A key role was played by the Australian 9th division led by Lieutenant General Leslie Morshead. After fierce battles between the Allied and Axis Forces, a massive artillery barrage commenced the Allied offensive on 23 October 1942. Between July and November 1942, the Australian 9th Division suffered close to 6,000 casualties but played a critical role in the Allied Victory in North Africa.
