Description / Background

This memorial is a photographic book of remembrance for members of All Saints' Anglican Church in Hunters Hill, NSW who served in the Second World War. Each veteran has their own page, which includes their name and service details. Most include a photograph and some also list their fate.

It is not known when the book was created; however, minutes of the Parish Council suggest 1946–47. A label at the back of the book contains the name D.S. Murray Bookbinders P/L of Sydney, suggesting it may have been made or worked on by that company.

The book has been fully digitised in colour and is available to view as a PDF at the link below. Digitisation was made possible through a Saluting Their Service Grant, from the Commonwealth Government in 2021.

The book is also on display at the church. Access to it is available when the church is open, and only with the assistance of a member of the Parish.

The words on the initial page of this Book of Remembrance are adapted from the Inscription in the Memorial Hall within the Collegiate School of Saint Peter at Adelaide, which commemorates the valour of those who served in the Great War (1914–1918).

"He saved others: Himself He cannot save."

St. Matthew, XXVII. 42.

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

St. John, XV. 13.

"He taught mankind on that first Christmas Day

What 'twas to be a man; to give, not take;

To serve, not rule; to nourish, not devour;

To help, not crush; if need to die, not live."

- Charles Kingsley.

Let us pray

O God of the Spirits of all flesh, we praise and magnify Thy Holy Name for all Thy servants who, having fought a good fight, have finished their course in Thy faith and fear; and we beseech Thee that, encouraged by their example and strengthened by their fellowship, we, with them, may be found meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light, through the merits of Thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Pro Deo et patria. [For God and country]

Inscribed in this book are the names of sons and daughters of the Parish of Hunter's Hill who, in the dark days which followed the outbreak of war in September of the year 1939, responded to the call of King and country to leave all that was dear to them, to endure hardness and to face dangers in many lands.

Striving to uphold the honour of the British Empire throughout the world, they have faithfully followed in the footsteps of their fathers, whose valour won for Australia a name that will live as long as the deeds of brave men are recorded in the history of mankind.

These pages bear the names of those who, counting not their lives dear unto themselves, went from this parish to serve overseas in the Naval, Military and Air Forces of the Empire.
