Inset into the board, below the inscriptions and veterans' names, is an open copy of the Gospel of St John in the Gogodara Language (Gogodara is a dialect of an indigenous tribe of Western Papua). Note: Previously known as St John's Anglican Church. Inscription Lest We Forget 1939 † 1945 We remember those who served and fell, and also those who served them well, for both we seek Christ's saving grace, though both are men of a different race. This living memorial is dedicated to those who went from the Parish of St John’s, Woolwich, and gave their lives in World War 2, 1939-1945. It takes the form of the translation and printing of two thousand copies of St John’s Gospel in the language of the Gogodara people, some of whom served with the Australian Military Forces in New Guinea.
