St John's Anglican Church Birchgrove, War Memorials Middle Image Image Image Image Image Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background St John's Anglican Church, Birchgrove, now known as St John the Evangelist, houses several war memorials. First World War honour board, completed at the end of the First World War and uneiled on 7 December 1918. It contains 160 names of parishioners who served and notes the 57 who died in action. It is the largest honour board in the district. It is inscribed on the south screen of the choir seating. The screen stands 2 meters above the chancel floor and is constructed of timber. The names are painted in gold. The Federal Government approved a grant for restoration from the 'Saluting Their Service' funding programme in 2015. First World War stained glass window: records a tribute to those who served. The Rectory: built in 1916 with a foundation stone dedicated to First World War soldiers. Second World War honour roll. Second World War sandstone engraving with lion head sculpture. Inscription Honour Roll Roll of Honour 1914 1915 [Names] Stained glass window Their name liveth for evermore RAAF - AIF - RAN Rectory plaque St John's Rectory. A monument to the memory of the men of St John's who served the Empire at the front in the war of 1914. This stone was laid by the most Rev. John Charles Wright D.D. Archibishop of Sydney on the 7th Day of October 1916.
