It was established in honour of members of the 3rd Battalion who served on the Kokoda Trail in the Second World War. A bronze dedication plaque is attached to the front face of the rock and a second bronze plaque on the back of the rock details the inspiration for the monument. The memorial was dedicated on 2 November 1991, marking the 49th anniversary of the campaign. The dedication was performed by Reverend G. Blyton and Bede Tongs MM of the 3rd Battalion. The unveiling was performed by Lieutenant Colonel Ewen H. Cameron. The memorial is located in Kokoda Memorial Park at East Jindabyne Lookout. The park was named for the memorial at a later date. The bushrock is surrounded by granite paving and shrubs, and is accompanied by a flagpole. The park has picnic tables and offers sweeping views of Jindabyne and Lake Jindabyne from the lookout. Commemorative services are held on site annually, on the first Saturday in November. A visitors' book is available for signing when a service is held.
