St Thomas Anglican Church Second World War Memorial Altar Rails, Wyrallah Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The two timber altar rails inside St Thomas Anglican Church in Wyrallah, NSW, are a memorial to four men from the district who died in the Second World War. Attached to the rails are two metal plaques, inscribed with their names and dedications to them. They were all members of the Royal Australian Air Force (R.A.A.F.). According to local historian Fred Hoskins, "the Silky Oak rails (Grevillea robusta) were crafted by C. R. Webber, a Second World War soldier, from timber grown on Avalon farm and gifted by [his] father Sergeant W. H. Hoskins, 5379, 9th Battalion 1st Australian Imperial Force." The memorial was dedicated at a special Anzac Day service held at the church on 24 April 1949. It was advertised in the Northern Star a day earlier, inviting relatives and friends to attend. About the veterans: Neville Richardson Munday was born on 18 October 1909 at Eglinton, NSW. He enlisted as a Flight Sergeant in the R.A.A.F. on 2 March 1941 at Brisbane, Queensland. As a member of the 4th Operational Training Unit, he died on 27 November 1943. Alan Douglas Riordan was born on 6 December 1922 at Lismore, NSW. He enlisted in the R.A.A.F. on 8 November 1941 at Sydney, NSW. As a Flight Sergeant in the 1 TTU Turnberry, he died on 16 August 1943. Lex Maitland Riordan was born on 4 March 1924 at Lismore, NSW. He enlisted in the R.A.A.F. on 22 June 1942 at Brisbane, Queensland. As a Pilot Officer in the 15th Squadron, he died in 17 January 1945. John William Walker was born on 28 December 1913 at Lismore, NSW. He enlisted in the R.A.A.F. on 11 November 1940 at Sydney, NSW. As a Flying Officer in the 168th Squadron, he died on 23 June 1944. All four veterans are also inscribed on the Wyrallah Second World War Honour Roll. Inscription Left plaque To the glory of God and in loving memory of A. D. Riordan and L. M.
