Corporal Gerald Griffith Memorial Window, March Uniting Church

The memorial is a stained glass window located in the Uniting Church in the small community of March, outside Orange NSW. The window commemorates Corporal Gerald Griffith who died in 1917 at Messines, in Belgium, during the First World War.

The window design is a narrow Gothic shape with a distinctive border and colour patterns. Rather than religious figures, the window features a decorative floral design with a central motif of Trefoils, representing the Holy Trinity, and white lilies, symbolising light and purity. The dedication to Corporal Griffith is situated at the bottom of the window. The memorial was designed by Messrs Lamrock and Bates and constructed by Mr W Johnstone.

The foundation stone of March's new brick Methodist church was set by Reverend G R Holland at a ceremony on 28 May 1921. The new church replaced the old timber church and was officially opened the next day by the Senior Circuit Steward, Mr Stanley Hicks. A large congregation attended including Gerald's parents and relatives, Sir Neville Howse, Dr Colvin, and a detachment of returned soldiers representing Orange RSS Club. Sir Howse unveiled the window and addressed the congregation about the war. Following the unveiling, 'The Last Post' was sounded by Mr J Taylor and an address from Reverend Holland was given (The Leader (Orange), 1 June 1921). 

Gerald was originally born in Orange. As a single farmer he moved to Jarnadup in Western Australia, where he enlisted in the AIF on 2 May 1916 as a Private. At the time, his father and mother, William and Elizabeth, still lived at 'Glenview' near March. Gerald's unit embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board the HMAT A 23 Suffolk on 10 October 1916. He served in the 44th Battalion, and died of wounds on 5 June 1917 at Messines in France. He was buried in the Trois Arbres Cemetery in Steenwerck, France.

The memorial window is available for viewing when the church is open for services.
