Drake Commemorative Cairn Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This commemorative cairn is located at the front of the Drake Community Hall, 44 kilometres east of Tenterfield, NSW. It consists of a brick wall set on a concrete pad, framed with various plantings including roses, shrubs and a larger tree. There are also two flagpoles with a chain and post fence at the front. Attached to the cairn is a plaque dedicated to those who served at home and overseas and those who paid the supreme sacrifice. The memorial was constructed by the local community. It was unveiled by local serviceman Albert George Edward (Pat) Lawrence (NX69195) on Anzac Day 25 April 2000. There is a photo of Pat and a photo of him addressing the audience at the unveiling located in the foyer of the hall, where a military museum has been created. Pat was born on 28 May 1917 at Armidale and enlisted on 6 March 1941 in the A.I.F. at Paddington NSW. As a private in the Reinforcements 2/1 Battalion, he was discharged on 3 February 1944. Various commemorative services are held throughout the year at the cairn.
