Enlisted first at aged 20 and served for 11 months in China during the Boxer Rebellion. Enlisted again 11 August 1914 and served 10 months in New Guinea with the Australian Naval Military Expedition. However was court-martialled and sentenced to 12 months hard labour in June 1915 for 'misappropriating government property'. After RTA reenlisted in January 1916. Served in France and Belgium during 1917. In civilian life he was an engineer and worked for his father's engineering firm (Ballerum & Co based in Kent Street)) and played over many years for Balmain Rugby (Union) first team. Killed after being hit by shell fragments in the head and arm whilst on the battlefield (aged 36). Last known address: 14 Paul Street
