Thomas William Challis was born in Balmain, NSW on 8 November 1921, to parents Thomas Henry Challis and Olive Bell. Thomas joined the CMF, 55/53 Battalion on 16 January 1939, and was discharged from the Army in 1942. On 9 November 1942, Thomas joined the Royal Australian Air Force, and became a Leading Aircraftman. He served for the rest of the Second World War and was discharged on 4 January 1946.

Thomas resided in Ingleburn. He married Doris Ruby Douglas on 12 July 1941 in Rozelle NSW. Thomas died on 3 October 1994, aged 72 years. Doris died in Illawong, NSW on 17 Aug 2003, aged 80 years.
