Leslie James Armstrong joined the AIF on 24 December 1915. He arrived in France in 1916. He was wounded in action on 14 November 1916 and sent to England on 20 November. After recovering from his wounds, he returned to France in July 1917. He was again wounded in action on 3rd September 1918 and sent back to England on 7 September 1918. He returned to Australia in May 1919.

Leslie died on 19 May 1978, aged 80. He is remembered on a plaque in the Queensland Garden of Remembrance.
