Norman Leslie Cairncross was born on 4 November 1915 at Rockdale NSW, to parents Henry Cairncross and Emily Mary Iliffe. He enlisted in the Australian Army on 1 October 1943 and served in the 2/17 Supply Depot Pl. He was discharged on 12 November 1945.

Norman married Ena Muriel Webb in 1943. He died on 5 March 1991 and Ena died on 23 April 1996.
