Obituary, from The Independent (Deniliquin), 5 May 1933, page 1:
Another Anzac passes
Mr, Sam Gardiner, Mathoura, Thursday.
The death occurred in a Melbourne hospital on 22nd April of Mr. Samuel Gardiner, aged 41, a native of Mathoura, and the first local lad to enlist. With the 14th Battalion, he was at the historic landing in April 1915, and served on Gallipoli until the last hope over, in which he lost a leg. For some time after his return he was Rabbit Inspector at Deniliquin, but of recent years he had spent a good part of his time in hospitals as a result of the after-effects of his war injuries. The family was well known in the district and still represented by Mrs W. R. Crump and Mrs S. Crump, sisters of the deceased. We join in extending our sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
