These regimental drums were presented
to the 2/23rd infantry battalion 2nd AIF

They accompanied the battalion in
operations overseas during which twelve
of them were destroyed by enemy action.
These surviving three drums were
returned to the club on the battalion's
return as an expression of appreciation
of the many kindnesses extended to the
battalion by the members of the club.
Framed tribute to Lt Harding
NX38918 Lieutenant William Charles Harding
(Decd) - Infantry
Approved for the Award of the Military Cross
Citation: When his Company Commander was killed in the defence of a
position in the Tel El Eisa area, Lieutenant Harding took command of
the unit. Although his Company suffered a large number of casualties over
the ensuing days, Lieutenant Harding displayed great leadership in
withstanding all of the furious German attacks against this feature until
relieved on 17th July, 1942. At one stage his position was over-run by enemy
tanks, but he kept his men down and waited for the following infantry
inflicting heavy casualties on them and forcing them to withdraw. The tanks
being then left without support, also were compelled to withdraw.
Lieutenant Harding displayed great personal coolness and courage under
heavy fire for almost a week of repeated counter attacks, all of which were
repulsed. This Officer has since been killed in action.
