Description / Background

A large printed sheet, originally hand-drawn and illustrated, set behind glass in a wooden frame.

The honour roll consists of several sections. Across the top are five insignias. In the centre is the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces. On the left are Ypres and Armentieres and Poperinge and Bailleul are on the right.

In the centre of the sheet, between two Graeco-Roman columns, is the list of more than 1200 veterans' names. Immediately below the names is a legend for six symbols used against many of the names. These are for: killed in action, wounded, missing, seconded ill, transferred, and previous active service. Unfortunately, the format of the honour roll, its condition and its location have made the symbols illegible against the names and in some other detail as well.

On the outside of the columns are four tables drawn in the form of scrolls, and two maps of the areas in which the First Tunnelling Company operated. The two tables on the left list the names and ranks of Administration staff and Attached Officers, and the two on right list the names and ranks of veterans who were awarded Honours and Gallant Conduct mentions.

Beneath the base of the columns are illustrations of tools used by the company and two townscape cameos.
