Description / Background

On Wednesday 3 May 1922, The Daily Telegraph provided the following description in a report on the unveiling:

The upper structure is of Pyrmont freestone, with black Swedish granite facings, on which the names are inscribed. At the base of the monument there are two steps of dressed stone, and rising from this is a rock-faced structure.

... The erection of the monument was in the hands of Larcombe and Son, Dubbo, and the cost of the work was 325 pounds 10 shillings... The plan for the memorial was prepared by the Memorial Advisory Board, Sydney.

The machine gun, originally atop the memorial, was a war trophy captured by Private Alexander Henry Buckley, who died the same day, 1 September 1918, during an Australian Imperial Force action near Peronne, France. For his great bravery he was awarded the Victoria Cross. The gun is thought to have been removed some time during the Second World War.

In 1991, the memorial underwent a major restoration at a total cost of $10,000, made possible by the efforts of the Gulargambone community with assistance from the Government. The work was carried out by Mr. M Philpott (Monumental Mason), Coonamble Shire, and Dennis Radin, Jack Andrews, and Colin Ryan. Restoration Committee members were J. P. H. Wheaton, Beryl Ryan, Peter Simpson, Colin Ryan and Doreen Best (Secretary).

The words 'Lest we forget' were added to the memorial after Anzac Day 1991.
