Description / Background

Gilgandra War Memorial was first unveiled on 12 April 1997. It is a brick wall, faced with multiple honour rolls and plaques, which have been added to over time.

The main honour roll is for those who served in the First World War. It is decorated with the Rising Sun badge of the Australian Imperial Force and bears a Latin inscription. A smaller plaque is attached to the wall below it, which includes additional names for the roll.

The two honour roll plaques for the Second World War feature decorative floral edges, as well as an emblem that represents the three service branches of the Australian Defence Force. The Rising Sun of the Australian Army is overlaid by an anchor for the Royal Australian Navy. Behind these are wings for the Royal Australian Air Force. The anchor is topped by a crown and the whole is surrounded by a laurel wreath.

The wall is a flanked by rosemary bushes and is accompanied by three flagpoles. A wide brick pathway leads up to the memorial from the road. The site is used for commemorative services.
