Description / Background

This plaque commemorates Flight Sergeant Rawdon Hume Middleton, a native of Gilgandra who died in action in Europe in 1942. Middleton was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. It features a likeness of Middleton in his pilot uniform on one side and a Crown and symbol of the Royal Australian Air Force.

It is likely the plaque would have been presented to Middleton's family of 'Alloway', Gilgandra. It is now located in the Gilgandra Coo-ee Heritage Centre. It is accompanied by a photo of Middleton and a poster detailing his early life, military service, his death and award of the Victoria Cross.

R.H. Middleton was born on 22 July 1916 at Waverley, NSW. He enlisted from Yarrabandai, NSW in Sydney on 14 October 1940. As a Pilot Officer from the 149th Squadron RAF he died on 29 November 1942. Many regional and national newspapers published details of his death and award of the V.C.
