It commemorates the four Royal Australian Navy ships which have carried the name 'Parramatta' and those who served on these ships. There are several plaques on the central stone, detailing the ships and the various ceremonies that have taken place involving this memorial. The memorial is located in the Queens Wharf Reserve opposite Parramatta Workers Club. It was originally located in the grounds of the Parramatta Bowling Club, and was re-dedicated on the present site on 23 November 1986. The Royal Australian Navy's website contains detailed information about the history and service of these ships, including the sinking of HMAS Parramatta II.
