Anzacs of Greece Memorial Plaque, Grafton Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial is a white marble plaque located within a garden bed surrounded by Rosemary shrubs set in the west of the grounds of the South Grafton cenotaph. The plaque is dedicated to the Anzacs who served in Greece (Lemnos, Macedonia, and Crete) during the First and Second World Wars. The plaque contains an inscription in classical Greek with an English translation. The Greek text is part of a longer inscription commemorating the sacrifice of Athenian warriors who died in 5BC while fighting at the Hellespont (Dardanelles) near what is now modern-day Gallipoli. Several identical plaques were designed by the Greek Consulate in Sydney and were offered to RSL sub-branches in 2016. The Clarence Valley Independent, 19 April 2017, reported that the memorial plaque had been given to the South Grafton RSL by the Greek Consul General, Sydney, and was to be unveiled on Anzac Day 2017 as part of the dedication service for the relocated and refurbished South Grafton cenotaph. Inscription Anzacs of Greece [Greek Text] Doing battle beside the Hellespont these men lost their shining youth. The brought honour to their homeland, so that the enemy groaned as it carried off the harvest of war, and for themselves they set up a deathless memorial of their courage.
