Description / Background

The former South Grafton War Memorial Baths are now known as the Indoor Pool and Boyd Nattrass Complex. The Complex was renamed after Albert (Boyd) Nattrass who was pool manger from 1 July 1959 to June 1981.

The only feature remaining from the original memorial is a wrought iron gate with the words "War Memorial Baths" at the top. The style of the gate is typical of the wrought iron work dated from the late 1950s to the early 1960s. Any of the early buildings from this period have been demolished.

After the tragic death of thirteen Wolf Cubs in the Clarence River at Grafton on 11 December 1943, a memorial pool was opened in Grafton, initially intended as a memorial pool for the Cubs and to service both Grafton and South Grafton. From 1946 onwards residents of South Grafton advocated for a memorial swimming pool to be built in South Grafton utilising a portion of the money collected for the Grafton baths (Daily Examiner, 25 January 1946).

In 1954 a committee was formed by the South Grafton RSL to discuss with the Mayor of South Grafton and Town Clerk the feasibility of establishing a South Grafton Baths Committee with the purpose of raising funds over a five-year period to create war memorial baths in the town (Daily Examiner, 19 March 1954).

The exact date that the South Grafton War Memorial Baths were opened in 1959 is unknown.
