Anzacs of Greece Memorial Plaque, Maclean Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial is a rectangular marble plaque, dedicated to the Anzacs who served in Greece (Lemnos), Macedonia, and Crete during the First and Second World Wars. The text on the plaque is divided into two sections. The first section is part of a longer Greek inscription, commemorating the sacrifice of Athenian warriors who died fighting at the Hellespont (Dardanelles) in the mid 5th century BCE. The second section is an English translation, to commemorate the service of the Anzacs of Greece. Several identical plaques were designed by the Greek Consulate in Sydney, to commemorate the 76th anniversary of Greek OXI day. They were offered to RSL sub-Branches in NSW. This plaque was presented to the Maclean sub-Branch in December 2016. It was accepted by Gulmarrad local Steve Walton, an Iraq veteran (The Daily Telegraph, 8 December 2016). The plaque was installed at the Maclean Cenotaph, which is the site for various commemorative services throughout the year. Inscription Anzacs of Greece [Classical Greek quote] Doing battle beside the Hellespont these men lost their shining youth. They brought honour to their homeland, so that the enemy groaned as it carried off the harvest of war, and for themselves they set up a deathless memorial of their courage.
