Description / Background

The memorial is a large timber honour board, listing those from the Maclean district who served in the Second World War, the Korean War, Malayan Emergency and the Vietnam War. The board is of simple design, with a classical pediment at the top. It demonstrates the skills of the artisan through the carving, finishing and signwriting. The alphabetical list of names is painted in gold across three recessed panels.

In April 1986, the Lower Clarence Clarion published an appeal from the Maclean RSL Club for names to inscribe on the memorial. The article stated:

The area being canvassed covers the township of Maclean, Townsend, Ashby and Ilarwill and embraces those who embarked for operational duty in all conflicts since World War 1.

The roll has already been opened and an appeal goes out to any person with family ties or other affiliations to please supply written details (with unit if known) also indicating if killed or wounded in action and lodge with the Executive Officer of the RSL Club in Maclean.

The board is located in the Maclean Services Club and access to it is restricted by the opening hours of the club. A transcription of the article above is located on a wall nearby.

Please note, due to the size of the board and its positioning in a narrow hallway, it was not possible to photograph the full board in situ for this listing. As a result, only partial photographs are shown above. If you have a photograph of the board in its entirety, please contact the NSW War Memorials Register
