Bucca First World War Honour Roll, Coffs Harbour Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This well-crafted honour roll features distinctive Moorish design and is made of silky oak and Queensland maple. The names are painted in gold on the board, across three columns. There are 22 names of volunteers listed across the left and right columns. In the centre are the eight names of those who were killed in conflict. A Win-the-War League was formed in Lower Bucca to support the war effort, and part of their function was to raise funds for this board. On 1 January 1919, a public meeting was held in the Bucca School of Arts, also referred to as the Mechanics Institute, to make the final arrangements. A number of designs from various makers were tabled and the one from cabinet maker Mr A. W. Fowler of Korora was selected. Fowler's son is one of those listed as fallen on the roll. The lettering was completed by Mr I. Sealby of Coffs Harbour. The memorial was unveiled at the Bucca School of Arts on 19 April 1919 at 2pm. Mrs J. Herd, a senior resident of Bucca, performed the unveiling and the Rev. Mr McGregor spoke. The function and roll were described in detail in The Coffs Harbour Advocate on 23 April. The roll has since moved to the Coffs Harbour Regional Museum. Access to the memorial is restricted to the opening hours of the museum.
