Corporal James Lewis Memorial Tablet, Cudgen Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The memorial is a marble tablet, dedicated to Lance Corporal James Lewis who was killed in action in the First World War. The tablet is made of white marble and has a Norman-shaped top. The dedication is incised into the marble and blackened. The tablet was made by Mr A. Armitage of Tweed Heads. It was unveiled at St Mark's Church in Cudgen by Reverend H. Lilley on 10 October 1918 (Tweed Daily, 12 October 1918). The church was demolished in the 1940s and the tablet was moved to a brick wall at the Cudgen War Memorial, which is located on the grounds of Cudgen Public School. Commemorative services organised by the school take place on site, at various times throughout the year. Access to the school's memorials are restricted at other times. Note: the tablet gives Lewis' rank as Corporal; however, his service records indicate his last held rank was Lance Corporal.
