Eden Creek District First World War Roll of Honor Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background The Eden Creek District First World War Roll of Honor is an elegant marble honour roll. The names of those who served are inscribed on the central tablet and highlighted in gold. The creation of the roll appears to have been a community project. In Kyogle a War Service Committee was formed by February 1917 and in that same month, the Eden Creek Progress Association reported they had started to collect the names of recruits from the area. The Gleneden Social Club also organised a dance for 20 November in the newly constructed local hall to raise funds for the roll. The memorial was unveiled at the hall on 7 October. The Kyogle Examiner, 11 October published a detailed account of the event during which Mrs John Goodall performed the unveiling. Mrs Goodall's four sons had enlisted and two sons had been killed in service. Mr W. Piggott served as chairman and other official guests included local councillors and religious leaders. The article described the memorial as follows: A beautiful marble tablet, the main slab was constructed of the best quality Sicilian white, bordered with pillars of a darker hue of Australian marble. The design was unique and striking. The lines were classical and traces of Roman and Greek were revealed in it. It was designed by Crane and Sons, Pitt St., Sydney. The names of the thirty soldiers were well set out in gold lettering, the names of the twelve men who made the supreme sacrifice being distinguished by a gold star.
