Description / Background

The memorial gates outside St Mary's Anglican Church in West Armidale are dedicated to Lieutenant Noel Stewart Ferris of the Royal Australian Navy, who was killed in an air crash in England in February 1950. They consist of a pair of metal gates, which are hung from two brick pillars that are topped by lights. Adjoining the gates is a fence, consisting of a brick base, timber posts, and wire panels.

The gates were erected by the Ferris family of nearby Armidale. They were dedicated by Armidale's Lord Bishop J.S. Moyes D.D. on 29 July 1956. Inside the church is a metal plaque, inscribed with details of the dedication and unveiling. While the gates can be seen from the road, access to the plaque is restricted by the opening hours of the church.
