Description / Background

The war memorial is a paper honour roll commemorating residents of the Lower Mid Clarence district who served in the First World War. It features decorative elements across the top, including a crossed Union Jack and Australian flag, the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces emblem, and a dove holding an olive sprig. Classical columns frame either side of the honour roll, both are wrapped in banners listing the names of various battles in which Australian personnel served. Two female figures holding laurel wreaths sit on pedestals at the base of each column. The left pedestal is inscribed with 'Victory' and '1914' and the right pedestal with 'Freedom' and '1919'. The names of over 700 veterans are printed in black in six columns within the centre of the honour roll.

The memorial is a template-style document, printed by Tipper Bros, a Maitland printing company founded in 1861. Other examples using the template from Tipper Bros can be found in many country towns in New South Wales.

It is unclear where the honour roll may have been dedicated following the First World War. Today, the memorial is housed in the Brushgrove-Tyndale Hall.
