Description / Background

The MacCabe Park Memorial Complex is a dedicated commemorative space, set within the leafy surrounds of MacCabe Park in the Wollongong CBD. The complex is denoted by a semi-circle of concrete, inset with decorative pavers in the shape of the Rising Sun badge of the Australian Army.

The two focal points of the complex are Wollongong's most historic war memorials: the Wollongong Cenotaph and the Trooper Frank Andrews Memorial. Also positioned throughout the space are numerous plaques, either attached to stone plinths or set within the concrete paving. The plaques are in honour of the conflicts and peacekeeping missions in which Australia has been involved. Two flagpoles are also on site.

The cenotaph and the Andrews memorial were moved to the park in 1984, and the complex was built around them at a later date. The area was rededicated on 13 April 2002.

The complex is located on the Church Street frontage of the park, near the intersection with Stewart Street.
