Description / Background

The Maclean Public School Great War Roll of Honour is a large, maplewood board, featuring a curved pediment and four carved columns. The top of the board is decorated with a carving of the Australian Commonwealth Military Forces Rising Sun emblem. The whole piece measures five feet by five feet and includes the names of 176 ex-pupils from the school who served in the war.

On 9 July 1918, the honorary secretary of the Maclean Parents and Citizen's Association (P&C), T A Goddard, advertised in The Clarence River Advocate that the list of names to be placed on the school's honour roll was available for viewing in the Shire Hall. An appeal was made for missing names.

The memorial was unveiled later in the year on 18 September. A detailed report of the well-attended event was published in the Daily Examiner on 20 September. Mr R J McDonald, president of the P&C, presided. He was accompanied by the President of the Harwood Shire, Councillor J Parsons; the Mayor of Maclean, Alderman E D Munro; Mr J Paterson, headmaster of the school; Reverends G Logan and J Thomas; and Mrs Sheehan, a district resident. Following the speeches, Mrs Sheehan removed the flags covering the board, officially unveiling the memorial. She was chosen for her role in the ceremony as she had sent four sons overseas.
