Manildra Second World War Honour Roll and Memorial Drinking Fountain Middle Image Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This war memorial fountain and honour roll are located outside the Manildra Soldiers Memorial Hall. The roll is comprised of six bronze plaques, which are attached to a large, rectangular monument, made of a dark grey stone. It has a triangular top piece, which is decorated with a laurel wreath in the centre. Four of the plaques are for those who served in the Second World War. These names are grouped under the emblems of the four Armed Services. There is also a separate list titled "Service Women" on the fourth plaque. A smaller plaque for those who served in South East Asia is attached to the base of the monument. Directly in front of the monument is a metal drinking fountain. In February 1950, the Manildra War Memorial Committee met to discuss the possibility of erecting a war memorial. They agreed on an honour roll, and it was moved the committee purchase one to be placed in front of the hall. A public meeting was planned for 10 March to consider the motion. No evidence has been found about the outcome of that meeting. The roll and fountain were presented to the town by Mr and Mrs G H Windus in memory of their son, Flight Sergeant K N Windus. A member of the R.A.A.F., Flight Sergeant Windus was killed in air operations in the United Kingdom on 27 November 1943, aged 24 years.
