Description / Background

Molong Public School was established in May 1859 until December 1943 and became a Central School from 1945.

The memorial is a marble tablet dedicated to the ex-teacher and ex-pupils from the school who fought in the First World War. The memorial tablet consists of a slab of Molong marble in a shield pattern mounted on a slab of black Borenore marble, both of which are polished. The inscription and dedication are surmounted by the Union Jack and Australian flags. The memorial was manufactured by Mr Larcombe of Dubbo at a cost of £15. The pupils had conducted several penny concerts and a large concert to raise funds for the memorial (Molong Argus, 6 February 1920).

The unveiling ceremony took place in the school grounds on 24 March 1920, taking the form of “children’s day” which was attended by some 400 children, parents, and residents. The School Principal, Mr Rush, presided over the event which was attended by the Mayor, Alderman Betts, Reverends J A Poole and S Gilby, President Bowhay and Councillor Gavin from the Amaroo Shire, and Mr Hudson from the P & C Association. District Inspector Campling unveiled the memorial tablet, after which followed refreshments and games for the children (Molong Argus, 26 March 1920).

The memorial is located in Molong Central School.
