Description / Background

The Manildra Soldiers Memorial Hall was erected to commemorate those from the district who served in the First World War. The hall is made of brick with a stuccoed exterior and an iron roof. Grecian pillars support the front entrance porch, and two stained glass feature windows sit above the main entrance. To the left of the building is an honour roll and memorial drinking fountain. Inside is the original First World War Roll of Honor and a variety of memorabilia. The hall's foundation stone was laid on 11 November 1925 and it was officially opened on 26 April 1926, following the first use for an Anzac Day service the day prior.

A Memorial Hall Committee was formed in Manildra after the First World War. Following the laying of the foundation stone by Sir Neville Howse on 11 November 1925, the Molong Express and Western District Advertiser, 14 November 1925, published a detailed report of the ceremony and tribute was paid to the work of Miss Ada Griffin, the committee's honorary secretary. Mr Claude Miller presided over the event and speakers included Mr Wren Murray, Dr Merrick Long, Bishop of Bathurst and Mr James O'Donnell.

On 26 April 1926 the Manildra Soldiers Memorial Hall was officially opened. The event was chaired by Mr C Miller, President of the Memorial Hall Committee, who outlined the cost of the hall and furnishings at £2,600. Mrs F E Churchill cut the red, white and blue ribbon stretched between the columns of the entrance porch. A further tribute was paid to Miss Griffin, with presentation of an oak writing bureau, an autograph book containing signatures of 200 subscribers and a basket of flowers. The Country Women's Party served afternoon tea to conclude the occasion and a ball was held that evening (Molong Express and Western District Advertiser, 1 May 1926).

A marble plaque commemorating the war service of men and women of Manildra was unveiled by Peter Andren, MP for Calare, on 25 April 2006, the 80th anniversary of the hall's opening.
