Mitchells Island First World War Honour Roll Middle Image 0 / 0 - Prev Next Description / Background This timber honour roll lists 41 men from Mitchells Island, NSW, who served in the First World War. It is an elegant piece, with a polished Queensland maple inlay and a border of hardwood. On its left and right sides are simple turned columns and at the top is a classical pediment. The board is decorated with the golden Rising Sun emblem of the Australian Imperial Force and the two crossed flags of the Union Jack and Australian Red Ensign. The memorial was unveiled on 10 May 1917 at the Mitchells Island School of Arts. A large gathering attended the function, convened by Mr Hugh McCaffery and presided over by Mr J. D. Cross. Mrs H. W. Booth senior, mother to several of the enlistees, unveiled the roll (The Northern Champion, 12 May 1917). At the time of the ceremony, the roll only included 38 names. They were published in The Northern Champion on 16 May 1917, along with their fate. The memorial remains in the School of Arts, where it can be viewed during opening hours. Also on site is the Mitchells Island Second World War and Korean War Honour Roll.
